Circumcision Care

Learn about care for a newborn circumcision. Linda Richardson, celebrity baby nurse, provides tips on how to properly care for a newborn circumcision.

If you have your little boy circumcised, you’ll be given special directions from your healthcare team on how to care for his penis. Until it’s healed, don’t use soap or diaper wipes on his penis, since that may sting. You also may want to avoid submerging your baby in bath water, until the circumcision is completely healed.

Gently clean the penis with plain warm water and a soft cloth whenever the diaper area becomes soiled. Apply a protective lubricant, as recommended by your baby’s provider.

Some swelling of the penis is normal after a circumcision. A clear crust will probably form over the area. A circumcision will usually heal completely after about two weeks.
